What code BMS_f089 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) detected that responses from the thermal controller (THC) was missing on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

If this alert is present, the BMS may not have been receiving the full set of messages it expects to receive from the THC for the 10x message period.

Dlaczego to poważne: jednostka termiczna steruje chłodzeniem i ogrzewaniem baterii. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY” and the car is asking you to stop safely. What happened: the battery management stopped hearing the thermal controller. The abbreviation MIA means a missing communication participant. Tesla's description also gives the threshold — the battery management did not receive the expected messages for ten times the normal message period, so this is far from a single dropout. Why it is serious: the thermal controller governs cooling and heating of the battery. Without it, the battery management has no way to keep the pack within a safe temperature window — and worse, it may not even know what temperature it is at. Running a battery blind, with no ability to cool it, is precisely the situation Tesla does not negotiate. By its own description this risks an inability to charge, to drive and to support the 12-volt system. What to do: get out of the traffic lane to somewhere safe, as the message says. Do not try to continue, even if the car will move again after a while — the risk is not that something happens immediately, but that the battery heats up with nobody watching. What next: the car belongs on a flatbed. A communication dropout between units is usually wiring, a connector or a faulty unit, and it is resolved at a service centre. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
