What code DI_a166 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

To už si zaslouží kontrolu. Co s tím: kód zmizí sám, jakmile je sedadlo řidiče zase obsazené. Když se objevuje bezdůvodně a opakovaně, nechte prověřit snímač obsazení a kabeláž pod sedadlem. Hlásí ho Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S a X od 2021, Model Y i Semi.

The screen shows “Vehicle automatically parked to prevent rollaway” and the car shifts itself into Park. What happened: the car decided the driver is leaving the seat while the car is not in Park. It judges this from several things at once — the seat occupancy sensor, an open door, an unbuckled belt and the presence of the key. If the conclusion is that nobody is at the wheel, it parks itself. This is a safety interlock against the car rolling away driverless. In most cases this is not a fault but the correct response to what actually happened: someone stepped out briefly without selecting Park, opened a door at the lights, or shuffled around inside the car. Owners meet it most often at charging stations and while manoeuvring on a driveway. When it is something else: if the message appears while you are sitting normally at the wheel, it points at the seat sensor or its connector. That happens after a seat has been removed, after upholstery work, or when something gets trapped under the seat. That deserves a check. What to do: the code clears itself once the driver's seat is occupied again. If it appears for no reason and repeatedly, have the occupancy sensor and the wiring under the seat inspected. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, Model Y and Semi.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
