What code BMS_f057 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected an issue with the thermal system chiller.

Im Display erscheint „Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY“.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: PULL OVER SAFELY”. The car is asking you to stop, and the cause lies in battery cooling. What happened: the battery management found a problem with the refrigerant heat exchanger — the chiller. It is the component that couples the air conditioning's refrigerant circuit to the battery's coolant circuit. When the battery is hot, the air conditioning actively pulls heat out of it through the chiller. It is the most effective way to cool the pack, and it is used during fast charging and under load in hot weather. Why this means stopping: without working cooling the car has no way to protect the battery from overheating, and a hot battery is the one subject Tesla does not negotiate. It would rather leave you at the roadside than continue with a temperature it cannot bring down. What usually causes it: a faulty pump or valve in the circuit, a blocked or leaking chiller, low refrigerant in the air conditioning, a failed temperature sensor. The result looks the same — the battery is not being cooled. What to do: stop as the car says and let it cool. Do not try to continue, even if the car will move again after a while. Book service, and until then do not fast charge — fast charging is precisely what demands the most from the cooling system. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
