What code CHG_w083 means

The charger inside the car that converts AC from the socket into DC for the battery. These codes cover AC charging problems — grid fluctuations, high line impedance, overheating.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

CHG_w083_allPhasesFaulted

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The alert is set if all phases have used up their retries and are in a faulted state. The cause is most likely exterior to the charger.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code directly on the screen, but it shows itself when charging has ended and will not start again. What happened: all phases of the onboard charger have used up their retries and remain in a faulted state. And Tesla's description adds the most useful sentence of all — the cause is most likely external to the charger. How this works: the onboard charger is divided into phases that operate independently. When one hits a problem it does not give up immediately — it retries, several times. That is sensible, because most charging problems are temporary: the voltage wobbles, communication drops for a moment, the station hangs. Only when the retries are exhausted on every phase at once does the charger give up. Why that note matters: if all phases fail simultaneously, it is unlikely they all broke at once. Far more likely they all share the same external problem — in the supply, the station, the cable. That is exactly why Tesla writes that the cause is probably outside. What usually causes it: unstable or weak mains voltage, an overloaded circuit, a faulty station, a damaged cable, poor contact in the socket. What to do: try another socket and another cable, ideally on a different circuit. Reduce the charging current in the car. If the car charges normally elsewhere, that confirms it and the problem lies where you were charging. If it charges nowhere, only then are the charger and a service centre next. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
