Tesla error codes and what they mean

Tesla does not use ordinary OBD-II codes but a system of its own — something like BMS_a142 or VCFRONT_a191. Type the code from your screen or from diagnostics and see straight away which part of the car it concerns and how serious it is.

Underscores and capitals do not matter — "bms a142" finds the same thing as "BMS_A142".

How to read a Tesla error code

The code looks complicated, but it is only three pieces of information stuck together. Once you can split them apart, you can tell what even an unlisted code refers to.

Subsystem abbreviation

The first part says which controller in the car reported the fault. BMS is battery management, CP the charge port, DI the drive inverter, UI the touchscreen. This is by far the most important part of the code.

Severity letter

A single letter hints at how serious it is. The most common is "a", then "w" and "f". The letter "u" means the car is simply waiting for you to do something — usually not a defect at all.

Sequence number

The number is just a sequence within that controller. On its own it means nothing and it repeats across subsystems — which is why codes cannot be compared by number alone.

What the letter in the middle means

a

Alert

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

w

Warning

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

f

Fault

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

d

Diagnostic entry

A service record that is not shown to the driver. Only a technician sees it in diagnostics.

u

User action required

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

i

Information

A purely informational record of a state change. Usually it means something returned to normal.

c

Other

A rare marker that appears only occasionally in the data.

Tesla does not publish an official legend for these letters. The meanings below are derived from how the codes behave in the data and from service technicians' experience, so treat them as a guide rather than an official table.

What to do about it

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.

Frequently asked questions about Tesla error codes

Where do I find error codes in a Tesla?
As an ordinary driver you only see the message on the screen, usually with the code in brackets or on the next line. The full list, including entries that are never displayed, is read out by a service centre through diagnostics, or can be read with an app connected to the CAN bus.
Why does Tesla not use standard OBD-II codes?
The classic P-codes defined by OBD-II were created for combustion engines and are not enough for an electric car with several control computers. Tesla therefore uses its own scheme, in which you can see immediately which controller reported the fault. An ordinary OBD-II reader cannot decode them.
Can I drive with an error code?
It depends which area it concerns. Codes from the user interface or the parking sensors do not restrict driving. Codes from the brakes, steering, airbags or high-voltage system can mean the car is not safe — with those, do not count on the message going away.
How do I clear an error code?
Codes cannot be cleared while their cause persists — the car simply reports them again. Some clear on their own after a screen restart or after the car has been parked. Permanent clearing is done by a service centre once the fault is fixed, and with safety systems there is no other way.
Does an error code automatically mean an expensive repair?
No. A large share of codes are informational entries or notices along the lines of "top up the washer fluid". The serious ones come mainly from the battery, drivetrain, brakes and restraint systems — and even there the scale of the repair varies case by case.
Can a code tell me the battery health of a used Tesla?
BMS codes say a lot about the battery, especially those about isolation and cell instability. You cannot read the actual remaining capacity from them, though — that is what the SoH figure is for, which for cars on TesList we pull directly from the vehicle.
Do these codes apply to Model 3, Y, S and X?
The scheme is shared across the whole fleet, but not every controller exists in every model. Air suspension codes only occur on Model S and X, while BCCEN, for instance, is a Model X controller. On older cars the meaning of some codes has also shifted between firmware versions.
Where does the data come from?
From the alert list in Tesla's service documentation, maintained on an ongoing basis by a public community. The internal alert names match the naming inside the car's firmware. We have descriptions for roughly half the codes — for the rest Tesla has published none.
