What code GTW_w036 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Prakticky to znamená horší topení v kabině, delší odmlžování a v mrazu hůř temperovanou baterii — což se projeví pomalejším nabíjením a menší rekuperací. Když ne, patří to do servisu. A hlavně: než začnete kvůli té hlášce řešit posilovač řízení, nechte si vyčíst, jaký kód za ní ve skutečnosti stojí. Hlásí ho Model 3 a Model Y.

Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model Y.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Steering Assist Reduced” — and this is another message that leads somewhere entirely different from what it suggests. What actually happened: the gateway found the PTC resistive heater's control unit running a different firmware version from the one the rest of the car expects. It has nothing to do with steering; the on-screen text simply does not fit here. What is genuinely affected: according to Tesla, the thermal management functions that rely on the heater. In practice that means poorer cabin heating, longer demisting, and in freezing weather a less well conditioned battery — which shows up as slower charging and less regeneration. Why a version mismatch is not ignored: the units exchange data in a precisely defined format. If one runs older firmware, it may read a message differently from how it was meant. With a heater fed from the high-voltage system that is a risk nobody wants to take, so the function is limited instead. When it happens: after an unfinished or interrupted update, or after the heater unit was replaced without a subsequent version match. What to do: check whether the car is offering a pending update and let it complete on a good connection — that often settles it. If not, it belongs in service. And above all: before you start investigating the power steering because of this message, have someone read out which code is actually behind it. Reported by Model 3 and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
