What code GTW_w037 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

ABS Needs Service: Contact Tesla Service

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

GTW_w037_RADCversionMismatch

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Když to nepomůže, jde o servisní záležitost — přehrání firmwaru jednotky si sami neuděláte. Jezdit se dá, jen bez radarových asistentů. Hlásí ho Model 3, Model S a X od 2021 a Model Y.

The screen shows “ABS Needs Service: Contact Tesla Service” — and this is one to watch, because the message points you in the wrong direction. What actually happened: the gateway found the radar control unit running a different firmware version from the one the rest of the car expects. It has nothing to do with ABS or the brakes; the on-screen text is misleading in this case. The real impact is elsewhere — limited or entirely unavailable Autopilot features that rely on the radar: adaptive cruise control, distance keeping, emergency braking. Why Tesla does not ignore a version mismatch: the control units exchange data in a precisely defined format. If one runs older firmware it may read a message differently from how it was meant — and in a system that brakes on its own that is an unacceptable risk. So the feature is switched off entirely instead. When it happens: after an unfinished or interrupted update, after a radar replacement without a subsequent version match, occasionally after work on the wiring. What to do: check whether the car has a pending update and let it complete on a good connection. If that does not help, it is a service matter — flashing a control unit's firmware is not a DIY job. The car can still be driven, just without the radar-based assistants. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
