What code GTW_f095 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Software Update Required: Unable to Start Car

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

There is a charger complex programmable logic device (CPLD) firmware version mismatch.

Podłącz je do Wi-Fi, daj mu dość czasu i dość energii w baterii. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Software update required” and this is one of the few messages that hints at the fix within itself. What happened: the vehicle gateway detected a firmware version mismatch on the charger's complex programmable logic device. The abbreviation CPLD refers to a small programmable chip that handles timing and safety logic inside the charger. Why the versions have to match: the charger is made of several parts that must work together precisely. The main control software and the logic in this chip are designed as a pair. If each comes from a different version, they can diverge on small things — when to switch what, how long to wait, what to do on an error. And small things are not forgiven when switching high voltage. Why the gateway watches this: the gateway is the unit that knows the software version in every other unit. It therefore sits where a mismatch can be caught before it shows up as an unexplained charging fault. What usually causes it: an unfinished or interrupted update, a charger swapped for a unit with a different version, software rolled back to an older release. What to do: let the car finish its firmware update. Connect it to Wi-Fi, give it enough time and enough energy in the battery. The update usually resolves the mismatch by itself. If the code persists after the update, it is most likely hardware that cannot be brought to the required version, and that is a job for service. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
