What code APP_w325 means

The application layer of Autopilot. Drives adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, lane changes and sign recognition. Faults here usually mean an assistance feature switched itself off temporarily — typically due to poor visibility or incomplete camera calibration.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Tesla tým rozlišuje medzi ojedinelým zásekom a opakovaným problémom počas jednej jazdy.

Co to znamená v provozu: během restartu Autopilot a asistenční funkce nejsou k dispozici. Trvá to desítky vteřin a pak se obvykle vrátí. Když Autopilot právě řídil, odpojí se — a řízení musíte okamžitě převzít. Proč se počítá do uspání: uspáním vozu se počítadlo vynuluje.

Trwa to kilkadziesiąt sekund i potem zwykle wracają. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

This code means the Autopilot computer restarted itself — and there is a rule attached to it worth knowing. What happened: the Autopilot unit was rebooted by a watchdog. A watchdog works by requiring the program to report at regular intervals that it is running; if that report does not arrive in time, the circuit restarts it automatically. The assumption is that the program has hung and will not recover on its own. The rule: Tesla's description says that if three such events occur before the car can sleep, Autopilot functionality may be limited. So the system lets one reboot pass, but not three. It is elegantly designed — a one-off hang is routine, but a unit restarting over and over is not reliable, and driving should not be entrusted to it. What it means on the road: during the reboot, Autopilot and the assistance features are unavailable. It takes tens of seconds and they usually return. If Autopilot was steering at the time, it disengages — and you must take over immediately. Why it counts until sleep: letting the car sleep resets the counter. Tesla uses that to distinguish an isolated hang from a recurring problem within a single drive. What to do: an isolated occurrence is a software matter resolved by an update. Check whether the car has a pending update. If it repeats and Autopilot drops out while driving, have the diagnostics read out. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
