What code APP_w326 means

The application layer of Autopilot. Drives adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, lane changes and sign recognition. Faults here usually mean an assistance feature switched itself off temporarily — typically due to poor visibility or incomplete camera calibration.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

APP_w326_kernelPanic

Description from the service documentation

Co to znamená v provozu: během restartu Autopilot a asistenční funkce nejsou k dispozici.

Różnica wobec APP_w325: tam program przestał odpowiadać i układ nadzorujący zrestartował go z zewnątrz. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

This code means the Autopilot's operating system crashed — and it is a close relative of APP_w325. What happened: the Autopilot unit recorded a kernel panic during its previous boot. That is the state where the core of the operating system hits an error it cannot recover from, and the only thing it can do is stop and restart. It is the most serious kind of software crash — it is not one application that fell over, but the system beneath them. The same rule as its sibling: Tesla's description says that if three such events occur before the car can sleep, Autopilot features may be limited. The system lets one crash pass, but not three. The difference from APP_w325: there the program stopped responding and a watchdog restarted it from outside. Here the system itself decided it could not continue. For a technician that is a clue about where to look — a kernel panic points more towards hardware or a driver, a hung process more towards an application. What it means on the road: during the reboot, Autopilot and the assistance features are unavailable. If it was steering at the time, it disengages and you have to take over. What to do: the code clears itself after ten seconds. An isolated occurrence is a software matter resolved by an update — check whether one is pending. If it repeats, have the diagnostics read out; recurring kernel crashes are often a sign of faulty memory or an overheating unit. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
