What code ESP_w002 means

The electronic stability program — ESP, ABS, traction control and brake force distribution. These codes show up as warning lights and some assistance systems dropping out. The car still brakes, just without electronic help.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The electronic stability program (ESP) fault lamp is a generic alert that is triggered by the ESP when there is a ESP diagnostic trouble code (DTC) set.

I przede wszystkim — zleć odczyt diagnostyki i pytaj o kod towarzyszący. Według tego nie da się naprawić nic. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Stability Control Disabled: Contact Tesla Service” and stability control stops working. What happened: the stability control warning lamp came on. The service description is unusually candid for this code — it is a generic alert triggered whenever the ESP unit logs any trouble code at all. By itself, then, it does not say what is wrong. How to read it: this code is a warning lamp, not a diagnosis. It is the electronic equivalent of a lit bulb on the dashboard — you know something is up, but not what. The real cause is carried by another record set alongside it. What the cause usually is: most often a wheel speed sensor, because stability control rests entirely on knowing how fast each wheel is turning. Beyond that: the steering angle sensor, the lateral acceleration sensor, the brake pressure sensor, or a problem in the hydraulic unit itself. What it means on the road: stability control and traction control are off, ABS is usually degraded. The brakes still work mechanically, but the car will not catch you if it starts to slide, and under hard braking the wheels can lock. On wet roads, snow and in corners you will notice it most. What to do: drive gently, expect longer stopping distances and avoid abrupt manoeuvres. And above all — have the diagnostics read out and ask about the accompanying code. Nothing can be repaired on the strength of this one. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
