What code ESP_d000 means

The electronic stability program — ESP, ABS, traction control and brake force distribution. These codes show up as warning lights and some assistance systems dropping out. The car still brakes, just without electronic help.

Severity — d

A service record that is not shown to the driver. Only a technician sees it in diagnostics.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

ESP_d000_absPumpMotorControl

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert indicates the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Pump Motor Control has a generic component fault.

K čemu je čerpadlo ABS: když ABS zasáhne, musí rychle a opakovaně snižovat a zase zvyšovat tlak v brzdách jednotlivých kol. Stejné čerpadlo používá i stabilizace, když potřebuje přibrzdit jedno konkrétní kolo, aby vůz srovnala. Co to znamená v provozu: bez funkčního čerpadla nemůže ABS ani stabilizace pracovat.

Do czego służy pompa ABS: gdy ABS interweniuje, musi szybko i wielokrotnie obniżać i znów podnosić ciśnienie w hamulcach poszczególnych kół. W starszych autach z dużym przebiegiem to zużycie. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

This code is a diagnostic record from the stability control unit and concerns the ABS pump. What happened: the ABS pump motor control is reporting a generic component fault. The word generic matters here — the unit knows something is wrong with the pump or its control, but does not distinguish exactly what. What the ABS pump is for: when ABS intervenes it has to lower and raise the pressure in individual wheel brakes rapidly and repeatedly. Lowering the pressure means releasing fluid into an accumulator — and the pump is what returns it to the circuit. Without it, after a few ABS cycles there would be nothing left to brake with. Stability control uses the same pump when it needs to brake one particular wheel to bring the car back into line. What it means on the road: without a working pump neither ABS nor stability control can operate. Both switch off. The brakes still work mechanically, but under hard braking the wheels can lock and the car can lose steering control. And if it starts to slide, nothing will help it out. What usually causes it: a faulty pump motor, its control inside the hydraulic unit, or the power supply. On older high-mileage cars it is wear. What to do: drive gently, expect longer stopping distances and avoid abrupt manoeuvres. The hydraulic unit is repaired at a service centre, and this is not a code to postpone — it is part of the braking system. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
