What code ESP_d002 means

The electronic stability program — ESP, ABS, traction control and brake force distribution. These codes show up as warning lights and some assistance systems dropping out. The car still brakes, just without electronic help.

Severity — d

A service record that is not shown to the driver. Only a technician sees it in diagnostics.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert is for the left front wheel speed sensor and indicates there is a line short to the UBATT or a short circuit of the WSS_FL sensor line to UBATT.

Co s tím: jeďte opatrně, počítejte s delší brzdnou dráhou a nechte to opravit.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

This code is a diagnostic record from the stability control unit and concerns the front left wheel speed sensor. What happened: the service description is unusually specific here — there is a short to supply voltage on the sensor line. In English, a short to UBATT: the signal wire has touched the positive rail somewhere, so the sensor reports a permanently high level instead of real pulses. Why this differs from a broken cable: a break is easy to spot, because the signal disappears. A short to supply is more insidious — something is always present, it just means nothing. The system therefore has to distinguish between a valid signal and a hard-applied voltage, which is exactly what it is doing. What it means on the road: without trustworthy speed from one wheel, stability control and ABS have no basis for their work and switch off or stay degraded. The brakes still work mechanically, but under hard braking the wheel can lock and the car can lose steering control. What usually causes it: chafed cable insulation at the wheel — the wire runs exactly where it flexes with every suspension movement and steering input, a classic fatigue point. Beyond that, a water-affected or corroded connector, damage after suspension repair or a wheel change. What to do: drive gently, expect longer stopping distances, and have it repaired. Diagnosis is straightforward — we know which wheel and what kind of fault. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
