What code BMS_w035 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Car May Not Restart

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

BMS_w035_SW_Isolation

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has detected that the isolation resistance has exceeded the threshold while the contactors are closed.

If this alert is present, the isolation has dropped below 190 kOhm with the contactors closed. The alert will clear when the isolation exceeds the 190 kOhm threshold while the contactors are closed.

Zimní sůl to zhoršuje. Nemyjte podvozek tlakem a nestůjte s vozem v hluboké vodě. Objednejte servis co nejdřív — a když už vůz nenaskočí, počítejte s odtahem.

Was tun: Nicht aufschieben.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Car Needs Service: Car May Not Restart” i to znacznie poważniejsze rodzeństwo kodu BMS_a142. Zimowa sól to pogarsza. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Car May Not Restart” and this is the considerably more serious sibling of BMS_a142. What happened: the isolation resistance between the high-voltage system and the bodyshell has fallen below the minimum threshold, with the pack contactors closed. The service documentation names a specific figure — below 190 kilohms. Where BMS_a142 warns that the value is approaching the limit, here it is already past it. Why the car is uncompromising about it: the isolation is the only thing separating several hundred volts from the metal people touch without a thought. While the resistance is high enough, the car is safe. When it drops, Tesla disconnects the high voltage, and with it goes the ability to charge, to drive and to support the 12-volt system. Hence the message that the car may not restart. What usually lies behind it: moisture where it does not belong — coolant leaking into the battery space, water after a deep puddle or a pressure wash of the underbody, aged wiring insulation, a damaged connector. Winter road salt makes it worse. What to do: do not put it off. The car can stop working without warning, quite possibly in a car park far from home. Do not pressure-wash the underbody and do not leave the car standing in deep water. Book service as soon as you can — and if the car will not wake up, expect a tow. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
