What code DI_w108 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Drive is not possible because of an issue with another system. This alert is always accompanied by another Drive Inverter (DI) alert.

Co s tím: hláška žádá bezpečně zastavit, a to udělejte. Vůz z takového stavu obvykle sám nevyjede. Zavolejte odtah a nechte vyčíst kompletní seznam kódů, ne jen ten první.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “PULL OVER SAFELY” and that is one of the most urgent messages Tesla has. It is also a code about which Tesla itself says it explains nothing on its own. What happened: the drive inverter did not meet the condition for transitioning into a state in which it could drive. In other words: it was waiting for a green light from the other systems and did not get one. Why the last sentence is the most important: the service description says driving is not possible because of an issue with another system, and that this alert is always accompanied by another drive inverter alert. That is the instruction for how to treat it — on its own it is only an echo. The real cause is in that other code. Why Tesla does it this way: before driving, the drive inverter has to see consent from the battery, from the high-voltage controller, from the brakes. If it simply fell silent at every missing consent, there would be no way to tell it had been waiting for anything at all. So this code is the record of “I was not given permission to drive”, and alongside it comes the one that says why. What that means for you: do not look for a fix for this code. Look for the code that appeared with it. That one determines whether the problem is in the battery, in the high voltage, in the brakes or elsewhere, and how serious it is. What to do: the message asks you to pull over safely, and you should. A car in this state usually does not set off again by itself. Call a tow and have the complete list of codes read out, not just the first one. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
