What code APP_w036 means

The application layer of Autopilot. Drives adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, lane changes and sign recognition. Faults here usually mean an assistance feature switched itself off temporarily — typically due to poor visibility or incomplete camera calibration.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

APP_w036_bdyMia

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

Tesla has not published a description for this code, so we work from its internal firmware name: APP_w036_bdyMia. How to read that name: “bdy” is short for body, meaning the bodyshell and its control unit. “Mia” is an abbreviation Tesla uses consistently across its alerts for a missing communication participant — a unit that should report its status regularly and has gone silent. You can verify this on other codes where Tesla did publish a description: on HVP_w014 their own text says in so many words that the BMS node is “mia” on the bus. What follows from that: the Autopilot application layer stopped hearing the body controller. Autopilot needs to know what is happening around the car — whether the doors are shut, what the indicators are doing, what state the vehicle is in. Without that information it cannot work reliably. What it means for the driver: Autopilot and the assistance features most likely will not engage. The code is usually accompanied by an umbrella message about assistants being unavailable, which is what you see on screen — this record explains why. What to do: try letting the car sleep and waking it; a brief communication dropout usually resolves that way. If the assistants stay unavailable, have the diagnostics read out and ask whether other codes from the communication group are present — bus dropouts are addressed through those, not through this one. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
