What code APP_w212 means

The application layer of Autopilot. Drives adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, lane changes and sign recognition. Faults here usually mean an assistance feature switched itself off temporarily — typically due to poor visibility or incomplete camera calibration.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Autopilot lane change disabled since driver's hands on wheel were not detected after warnings

After 3 audible warnings asking driver to hold the wheel

Autopilot lane change disabled

The screen shows “Autosteer unavailable for the rest of this drive” and automatic lane change stops working until the drive ends. What happened: this is not a fault, it is a penalty. Autopilot prompted you three times with an audible warning to hold the wheel and got no answer — it did not detect hands on the rim. After the third ignored warning it disabled the feature and will not re-enable it for the rest of the drive. It unlocks only after you park and begin a new drive. Why Tesla is so uncompromising about it: Autosteer is an assistant, not autonomous driving. It requires the driver to be ready to take over at any moment. When the system repeatedly fails to detect hands on the wheel, it cannot know whether the driver is paying attention — and would rather take the feature away than rely on it. A common misunderstanding: the sensor does not detect touch but slight resistance. Resting your fingertips lightly on the wheel is not enough — you have to apply a small pull or push to the rim for the car to register it. Plenty of drivers get warnings precisely because they are holding the wheel, but entirely passively. What to do: next time respond to the first prompt, not the third. If you want Autosteer back immediately, stop, select Park, and set off again. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Na displeji se objeví „Autosteer unavailable for the rest of this drive“ a automatická změna pruhu přestane fungovat až do konce jízdy.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Autosteer unavailable for the rest of this drive” i automatyczna zmiana pasa przestaje działać aż do końca jazdy. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
