What code APS_w053 means

The second, supervising processor inside the Autopilot computer. It checks the primary processor's work and guards safety functions, chiefly automatic emergency braking. Codes from here often accompany APP codes and clear once camera calibration finishes.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Co to znamená v provozu: adaptivní tempomat, udržování odstupu a nouzové brzdění nejsou k dispozici.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code directly on the screen, but it shows itself as the assistants dropping out. What happened: the forward radar did not receive valid vehicle signals from the Autopilot secondary processor. The service description sums up the impact bluntly — Autopilot features will be disabled. Why the radar needs vehicle data: on its own a radar sees only reflections. To turn those into useful information it has to know how fast your own car is going, where the steering is pointed and what curve it is in. Only then can it tell a stationary barrier from a slow-moving car and work out what is in your lane. Without that data it has a pile of reflections it has no way of sorting. What the secondary processor is: the Autopilot unit has several compute sections, and one of them handles safety supervision and the distribution of state data. That is precisely where the radar gets this information from. What it means on the road: adaptive cruise control, distance keeping and emergency braking are unavailable. The car drives normally, just without the assistants. What usually causes it: interrupted communication between units, a failure or restart of the Autopilot unit, damaged wiring or a connector, less often a faulty unit. What to do: try letting the car sleep and waking it; a brief dropout usually clears that way. If the assistants stay unavailable, have the diagnostics read out and ask about other codes from the Autopilot area — they are usually there too. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
