What code APS_w192 means

The second, supervising processor inside the Autopilot computer. It checks the primary processor's work and guards safety functions, chiefly automatic emergency braking. Codes from here often accompany APP codes and clear once camera calibration finishes.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

APS_w192_CANFault

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

SMS/AP ring buffer error

Was meist geschieht: Das Steuergerät startet neu.

Bufor cykliczny to sposób, w jaki program trzyma w pamięci ostatnie kilka sekund danych: zapisuje w kółko w to samo miejsce i nadpisuje najstarsze wpisy. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

A driver will not usually see this code on the screen — it is a service record from the driver assistance control unit. What happened: the assistance unit registered a ring buffer error in the Autopilot safety management subsystem. A ring buffer is how a program holds the last few seconds of data in memory: it writes round and round to the same place, overwriting the oldest entries. Autopilot uses one so it has a short history available — without it, it cannot compare what happened a moment ago with what it sees now. Why this is not a trifle: the monitoring subsystem is the part that checks whether Autopilot is behaving correctly. If its own memory becomes corrupted, it loses the ability to perform that check reliably. So this is not a fault in how Autopilot drives, but in what supervises it. What usually happens: the unit restarts. Autopilot and the assistance functions are unavailable during the restart and usually return afterwards. A driver notices it as a brief loss of the assistants, or as an accompanying umbrella message. What to do: an isolated occurrence is usually a software matter resolved by an update. Check whether the car has a pending update. If it repeats, especially if Autopilot drops out while driving, have the diagnostics read out — recurring memory errors in the assistance unit are not something to wait out. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
