What code BMS_a088 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

BMS sees the VCFRONT is missing while in DRIVE

BMS cannot measure any temperatures one or more of the modules

Na displeji se objeví „Vehicle may not restart“ a je to hláška, kterou nemá smysl brát na lehkou váhu. Proč zrovna přední jednotka: ta má na starosti dvanáctivoltovou soustavu, tepelný management a spoustu dalšího, s čím musí řízení baterie počítat.

Prečo práve predná jednotka: tá má na starosti dvanásťvoltovú sústavu, tepelný manažment a množstvo ďalšieho, s čím musí riadenie batérie počítať.

The screen shows “Vehicle may not restart” and this is not a message to take lightly. What happened: the battery management stopped hearing the front vehicle controller while driving. The abbreviation MIA in the internal name means a missing communication participant — a unit that should report its status regularly has gone silent. And it happened while the car was moving. Why the front controller in particular: it is responsible for the 12-volt system, thermal management and a great deal more that the battery management has to account for. Without its messages the battery management does not have a complete picture of the conditions it is working in. The service note adds a specific consequence — the battery management cannot measure the temperatures of one or more modules. What it means: Tesla says this risks an inability to charge, to drive and to support the 12-volt system. The on-screen message is unambiguous — the car may not restart once you park it. What to do: while the car is still running, drive somewhere you can leave from or be recovered from — not into the underground car park at the end of the street. Do not count on it waking up in the morning. Book service as soon as possible; a communication dropout between units is not a home fix and often comes down to wiring or a connector. Reported by Model 3, and Model S and X from 2021.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
