What code BMS_a146 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

One or more bricks in the HV battery are at too low of a voltage to permit charging

BMS detected and recovered from bus off on VEH, HVS or HVI CAN bus

The BMS uses this for generic assertions about unexpected conditions

An Soc by Ah saturation of >3% occurred while SOC saturation was active

All bricks have <1% SOC by Ah saturation

BMS is likely overestimating SOC of some bricks due to incorrect CAC or Coulomb counting

BMS has detected that one or more bricks' voltage is below the warning threshold

The screen shows “Vehicle may not restart” and this is one of the most unpleasant codes you can meet on the battery side. What happened: the battery management found the voltage of one cell group has fallen below the minimum threshold. A cell group is called a brick, and crossing that lower limit means deep discharge — a state manufacturers of lithium cells go to great lengths to avoid. Why deep discharge is so serious: below a certain voltage, chemical processes begin inside the cell that damage it irreversibly. A copper bridge can start forming between the electrodes, and such a cell is no longer safe to charge — there is a risk of an internal short. That is exactly why Tesla blocks charging once the voltage drops below the threshold. The service description says it directly: one or more bricks are at a voltage too low to permit charging. What it means in practice: you cannot charge the car, and Tesla says an inability to drive and to support the 12-volt system is also at risk. This is not a state you can drive out of with a charger. How it comes about: most often from standing a long time at a low state of charge, especially in winter. A parked car still consumes, and leaving it for months at ten percent lands you exactly here. The other possibility is one unwell cell group falling faster than the rest. What to do: tow to a service centre. There is no home procedure, and attempts to revive a deeply discharged high-voltage battery with a charger are dangerous. Reported by Model 3 and Model S.

Hlásí ho Model 3 a Model S.

Was tun: Abschleppen in die Werkstatt.

Zgłaszają go Model 3 i Model S.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
