What code BMS_f156 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The intent of this alert is to try to detect potential Battery Monitor Board (BMB) hardware (HW) issues related to the Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) Voltage Reference (Vref), which could lead to f107 Temperature Voltage Sense Harness (TVSH) faults.

To detect a potential Vref HW issue, the Battery Management System (BMS) takes several "throw-away" samples from the ADC and makes sure they all match. If they do not match, there is a reference issue, and the alert is flagged.

Na ekranie pojawia się „Service is required”, ale przy tym kodzie Tesla sama podaje, że jest on głównie informacyjny. To różnica wobec większości pozostałych kodów z rodziny BMS_f. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Service is required”, but for this code Tesla itself notes that it is primarily informational. That sets it apart from most other codes in the BMS_f family. What happened: the battery management found that the voltage reference on a monitoring board inside the pack is unstable. The service description also gives the purpose — this check is meant to catch a possible hardware problem on the board before it shows up any other way. What a voltage reference is: each board measures cell voltages with a converter that compares the measured voltage against a fixed reference. The reference is the yardstick — if it wanders, every measurement resting on it wanders too. You cannot see it in an individual number, because that number looks normal; you only see it in the reference itself behaving oddly. Why this is cleverly built: this is a preventive check. It does not report that the readings are wrong — it reports that the measuring instrument is becoming untrustworthy. Catching that before nonsensical cell voltages start coming out is exactly the kind of early warning that is worth more on a battery than later certainty. What to do: the car usually carries on and restricts nothing. But have it checked at your next service visit, and above all mention it if other battery-side messages join it. An unstable reference is often the precursor to a genuine monitoring board fault. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
