What code BMS_u008 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Acceleration Reduced: Contact Tesla Service When Convenient

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

BMS_u008_limpMode

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The vehicle has entered limp mode.

Počítejte s tím a víc používejte brzdu. Kód sám neřekne co — to prozradí až doprovodný záznam. Co s tím: „when convenient“ v hlášce neznamená „někdy“. Vůz jede, takže se dostanete domů i do servisu, ale nouzový režim je varování, ne nový normál.

Was tun: „when convenient“ in der Meldung heißt nicht „irgendwann“.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Acceleration Reduced: Contact Tesla Service When Convenient” and the car becomes noticeably duller — in its responses rather than in driving as such. What happened: the battery management detected a condition that would damage the high-voltage system if operation continued, and put the car into limp mode. Acceleration, top speed and regenerative braking are all reduced. The car keeps going, but in a gentle mode so that whatever is wrong does not get worse. What you will notice: the accelerator responds lazily, the car does not pick up as usual, you will not reach your normal speed on the motorway, and lifting off produces less braking — unfamiliar at first, because one-pedal driving no longer behaves the way you are used to. Allow for that and use the brake more. What may lie behind it: battery temperature out of range, a cooling problem, degraded isolation, unbalanced cells, a fault in some part of the high-voltage circuit. The code alone does not say which — only the accompanying record reveals that. What to do: “when convenient” in the message does not mean “sometime”. The car drives, so you will get home and to a service centre, but limp mode is a warning, not a new normal. Book an appointment; if further battery messages join it, do not wait at all. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
