What code BMS_u018 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Battery Charge Level Will Be Restricted

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

BMS_u018_SOC_Imbalance_Limiting

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Internal condition to HV battery requiring limiting max allowed brick voltage.

This alert was formerly named BMS_u018_Max_Charge_Limited in firmware versions prior to develop/2020.32. If BMS_u018_Max_Charge_Limited appears on the vehicle or in the logs, update the vehicle firmware to the current version.

Když omezení nezmizí, jděte do servisu.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Battery Charge Level Will Be Restricted” and the car limits how high it may be charged. For anyone buying a used Tesla, this is one of the most important codes there is. What happened: the cells in the battery do not all sit at the same state of charge. Small differences are normal and the battery management balances them continuously. This code means the gap between the most and least charged cell group has passed the acceptable threshold. The management therefore pushes the target voltage down — Tesla's description names a level corresponding to roughly fifty percent state of charge. What it means in practice: range drops to about half, and charging will not go above that ceiling no matter what limit you set. The car drives, but overnight it has become a short-distance vehicle. Why it is serious: cell imbalance is often a sign that one cell group is ageing faster than the rest, or that something is going on inside the pack. Sometimes it evens out on its own with a longer charge to a higher percentage and quiet time parked, giving the car a chance to balance. Often it does not. What to do: try leaving the car charged overnight without driving off, so it has room to balance. If the restriction does not lift, go to a service centre. And if you see this code on a car you are considering buying, treat it as a serious warning — it is often the prelude to battery work. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
