What code BMS_w094 means

The Battery Management System — the brain of the high-voltage battery. It watches individual cell voltages, temperature, isolation resistance and the permitted power output. On a used car this is the most closely watched group of codes, because battery health shows up here. Codes about isolation or cell instability are among those worth having checked promptly.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Power Reduced

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Battery Management System (BMS) has not received a response from the Drive Inverter Controller Area Network (CAN) bus and has reported the Drive Inverter as missing (MIA).

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Power Reduced” and the car becomes noticeably duller in its responses. What happened: the battery management stopped receiving the expected messages from the drive inverter. The abbreviation MIA means a missing communication participant — a unit that should report its status regularly has gone silent. Why that leads to reduced power: the battery management and the drive inverter have to stay in constant agreement. The battery says how much current the inverter may draw; the inverter says how much it is drawing. If one of them stops talking, the battery has no way of knowing what is happening to the energy — and without that it cannot permit full power. Reducing power is therefore a logical response, not an imposition. What you will feel at the wheel: the accelerator responds lazily, the car does not pick up as usual, and you will not reach your normal speed on the motorway. Regeneration is usually limited too. What usually causes it: a broken or damaged bus between units, a corroded connector, a loss of power to the inverter, less often a faulty unit. On older high-mileage cars it is usually the wiring — it runs through places with heat and vibration. What to do: try letting the car sleep and waking it; if it was a temporary dropout, communication and power both return. If the limit persists, have the diagnostics read out. You can get home safely, but planning a long journey on it makes no sense. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
