What code CHG_f076 means

The charger inside the car that converts AC from the socket into DC for the battery. These codes cover AC charging problems — grid fluctuations, high line impedance, overheating.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Unable to Charge: Close Charge Port Door, Press Brake Pedal, Then Try Again

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert indicates the peak line current is over the maximum threshhold.

Gdy wszędzie, sprawa należy do serwisu. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

Co s tím: nejdřív udělejte, co hláška říká — zavřete dvířka nabíjecího portu, sešlápněte brzdu a zkuste to znovu. Když všude, patří to do servisu.

The screen shows “Unable to Charge: Close Charge Port Door, Press Brake Pedal, Then Try Again” and charging is interrupted. What happened: the peak line current exceeded the maximum threshold. This is not about the average but about the peak — an instantaneous value that briefly spiked higher than permitted. Why peaks are watched and not just the average: a current spike can damage the semiconductor components in the charger even when it is brief and disappears in the average. Power transistors tolerate a certain continuous current, but a short overcurrent heats them faster than they can shed the heat. So the charger measures peaks too and shuts down when they are exceeded. What usually causes it: an unstable supply with voltage spikes, large appliances switching on the same circuit, a faulty or cheap charger without proper control, a damaged cable. Occasionally a socket with poor contact causes it too, where arcing makes the current jump briefly. What to do: first do what the message says — close the charge port door, press the brake pedal, and try again. If it repeats, try another socket and cable, ideally on a different circuit, and reduce the charging current in the car. If it only happens in one place, the problem is there rather than in the car. If it happens everywhere, it belongs in service. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
