What code CHG_u007 means

The charger inside the car that converts AC from the socket into DC for the battery. These codes cover AC charging problems — grid fluctuations, high line impedance, overheating.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Charge Cable Fault: See Charge Cable Manual

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert is set when the pilot signal coming from the charging station is set to a value that indicates a charging station issue.

Servisní popis to říká přesně takhle — nabíjecí stanice hlásí problém sama o sobě. Co je pilotní signál: vodič, kterým spolu vůz a nabíječka komunikují. Nabíječka jím sděluje, kolik proudu je k dispozici a v jakém je stavu, a to napětím a střídou obdélníkového průběhu. Norma pro tenhle signál obsahuje i stav, kterým stanice říká „mám poruchu, nenabíjej“.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Charge Cable Fault: See Charge Cable Manual” and this is one of the few messages where the car points clearly outwards. What happened: the pilot signal from the charging station is at a value that, under the standard, indicates a station fault. The service description puts it exactly that way — the charging station is reporting a problem itself. What the pilot signal is: the wire over which the car and the charger communicate. Through it the charger states how much current is available and what state it is in, using the voltage and duty cycle of a square wave. The standard for that signal includes a state by which the station says “I have a fault, do not charge”. That is exactly the state the car measured. What is good about that: this is not a puzzle. The car is not reporting that it does not understand something — it is reporting that the charger explicitly told it that it is faulty. The fault is therefore demonstrably outside the car. What usually causes it: a faulty cable or mobile charger, an overheated station that shut itself down, a fault at a public stall, a damaged adapter. With home wallboxes it is usually an internal fault or a tripped breaker on the station's side. What to do: try another cable and another station. If the car charges without trouble elsewhere, that confirms it. Stop using the original cable or charger and have it inspected — the message itself points you to the charging cable's manual, after all. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
