What code CHG_u015 means

The charger inside the car that converts AC from the socket into DC for the battery. These codes cover AC charging problems — grid fluctuations, high line impedance, overheating.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Unable to DC Fast Charge

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Fast charging has been disabled.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Unable to DC Fast Charge”. Fast charging is disabled; ordinary charging from a socket or wallbox still works. What happened: the car has disabled DC charging itself. The service description is terse — fast charging has been disabled. The code does not carry the reason; that sits in the accompanying record. Why it usually happens: fast charging is the most demanding thing a battery experiences. Over a few dozen minutes it takes in power in the hundreds of kilowatts, which is an enormous thermal load. If the car has any doubt about the battery, its cooling, the isolation or the charging circuit, fast charging is the first thing it blocks — while leaving ordinary slow charging running, because that puts far less strain on the pack. What it means in practice: you will charge normally at home or on a wallbox, but not at a Supercharger. For everyday driving that is no problem; for a longer journey it is a fundamental obstacle. Plan accordingly. What to do: have the diagnostics read out and above all ask about the accompanying code, because only that says why the car disabled fast charging. Until then charge slowly and do not rely on Superchargers when planning trips. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
