What code CP_a088 means

The car's charge port — latch, connector lock, indicator light and proximity sensor. These codes typically appear when the connector will not lock or the car does not register that it is plugged in.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

A driver will never see this code, and Tesla itself notes that it has no impact. What happened: the temperature of the DC fast-charging pins exceeded the value predicted by the thermal model. The interesting part is the note the service description adds — the code clears immediately and without consequence. What a thermal model is: while fast charging, the car does not only watch the measured connector temperature — it simultaneously calculates what that temperature ought to be given the current, the charging time and the ambient conditions. It then compares reality against the calculation. When they diverge, it makes a note. Why this is watched: an overheating pin is the most dangerous spot during fast charging. Current in the hundreds of amps flows through it, and raised contact resistance at a single point can melt the connector. Comparing against a model is a way to catch a deviation before it shows on the thermometer. How to read it: an isolated deviation from the model is routine. Cooler weather, a different stall, a different charging curve — the model is an estimate, and estimates occasionally miss. That is exactly why Tesla states it has no impact. When to pay attention: when it repeats, and especially when an actual charging power limit or a high adapter temperature message joins it. At that point it is no longer a model deviation but real heating, and the cleanliness and condition of the pins in the charge port are worth checking.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
