What code CP_a111 means

The car's charge port — latch, connector lock, indicator light and proximity sensor. These codes typically appear when the connector will not lock or the car does not register that it is plugged in.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The charge port inlet heater is not able to heat properly

The inlet heater was unable to reach the inlet defrosting temperature

Charge port may stay frozen, defrosting through other means may be required

Charge port does not receive all expected CAN messages from the VC

Charge port receives all expected CAN messages from the VC

Jak si pomoct: nechte vůz předehřát z aplikace, ideálně dostatečně dlouho dopředu — teplo z kabiny a z tepelného managementu prohřeje i okolí portu. Hlásí ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Hlási ho Cybertruck a Model 3.

Zgłaszają go Cybertruck i Model 3.

This code is a purely winter matter, and in our climate it has quite practical significance. What happened: the charge port heater cannot reach the temperature needed for defrosting. Tesla puts a heating element in the charge port exactly so that, in frost, the ice around the latch and connector melts. This code means the heating did not get where it was supposed to. What follows: Tesla's description says it directly — the charge port may stay frozen and you will have to defrost it by other means. That is unpleasant at the moment you are standing at a charger in freezing weather and the cable will not go in, or will not come out after charging. How to help yourself: precondition the car from the app, ideally well in advance — heat from the cabin and the thermal management warms the area around the port too. Putting the car in a heated garage for a few hours also helps. Never try to remove ice by force or with anything sharp; the charge port latch is plastic and it breaks. What may lie behind it: a faulty heating element or its supply, a damaged connector, or a temperature sensor reporting nonsense. Occasionally it just means it is extremely cold outside and the heater simply cannot keep up. What to do: if it repeats every frost, have the port heating checked — in winter it is a feature you come to rely on. Reported by Cybertruck and Model 3.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
