What code CP_w035 means

The car's charge port — latch, connector lock, indicator light and proximity sensor. These codes typically appear when the connector will not lock or the car does not register that it is plugged in.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Never Insert Charge Cable Using the Charge Port Lever: Using Lever to Insert Cable Will Prevent Charging

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

CP_w035_latchMovement_1

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The latch has moved into a position that prevents charging.

If this alert is present, the latch may have been inadvertently moved manually or when a charge attempt times out and the latch locks into its default position.

Na displeji se objeví dlouhá hláška „Never Insert Charge Cable Using the Charge Port Lever“ a nabíjení se přeruší. Ještě jedna možnost, kterou servisní popis zmiňuje: západka se do téhle polohy dostane i sama, když pokus o nabíjení vyprší časovým limitem.

Dann hilft dasselbe — abziehen, schließen, erneut versuchen. Betrifft Model S 2012–2020 und Model X 2015–2020.

Na ekranie pojawia się długi komunikat „Never Insert Charge Cable Using the Charge Port Lever” i ładowanie się przerywa. Wtedy pomaga to samo — odłączyć, zamknąć, spróbować ponownie. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows the long message “Never Insert Charge Cable Using the Charge Port Lever” and charging is interrupted. Tesla is unusually explicit here, because this is something people do to themselves. What happened: inside the charge port there is a latch that locks the cable during charging so nobody can pull it out under load. Next to it is a lever for manual emergency release — for cases where the latch freezes or jams and the cable will not come out. This code means the latch reached the disengaged position without the electronics sending it there. In other words: someone pulled that lever. Why Tesla raises it: if the lever is operated while the cable is being inserted, the latch locks into a position where it will not permit charging. Hence the sentence in the message — the lever is not an aid for inserting the cable, it is an emergency release. What to do: unplug the cable, close the charge port door and leave it closed for a moment. The code clears once the car sees the door closed with no cable connected. Then insert the cable normally, without touching the lever. One other possibility the service description mentions: the latch also reaches this position on its own when a charge attempt times out. The same remedy applies — unplug, close, try again. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
