What code DI_a119 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

DI_a119_hvpMIA

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Any received HVP frame is MIA

Dlaczego to nie błąd falownika: „brak wszystkich ramek” to zwykle objaw czegoś innego — wyłączonego albo odłączonego sterownika wysokiego napięcia, przerwanej magistrali, zaniku zasilania. Ten kod prawie nigdy nie chodzi więc sam i czytać go trzeba razem z pozostałymi.

This code is short on words, but what it says is worth unpacking. What happened: the drive inverter has stopped receiving frames from the high-voltage controller — all of them, not one message. And the second line of the description is the interesting one: active discharge may turn on. What active discharge is: the drive inverter contains capacitors that hold voltage after the battery is disconnected. Active discharge is a circuit that deliberately brings that down to a safe value. It is a protection — for technicians working on the car, and for a crash, where getting high voltage out of the circuits quickly is what you want. Why it turns on when communication goes quiet: the inverter has lost contact with whatever controls the high voltage. It does not know whether the contactors are closed, whether it should be preparing to drive, or whether someone is about to open the bonnet. In that kind of uncertainty the safest option is to get rid of voltage nobody is controlling. The car chooses a safe state instead of carrying on blind. Why this is not the inverter's fault: “all frames missing” is usually a symptom of something else — a high-voltage controller that is off or disconnected, a broken bus, a loss of power. So this code almost never comes alone and should be read together with the others. What to do: if it appeared during service work or after disconnecting the battery, that is expected behaviour. If it appears while driving and the car has stopped, it is a genuine high-voltage fault and belongs in service.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
