What code DI_a138 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

DI_a138_frontUnitDisabled

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

The screen shows “Front motor disabled - OK to drive”. The car is telling you two things at once: the front motor is shut down, but you may carry on driving. What happened: a dual-motor Tesla splits torque between the front and rear axles. Here the drive control unit found it cannot send a torque request to the front inverter because the front drive unit is disabled. It does not say why on its own — the reason is carried by another code from the DIF group set alongside it. DI_a138 is the consequence, not the cause. What it means on the road: the car drives on the rear axle only. Acceleration is noticeably weaker, range is worse, and in winter or on a wet surface the traction you are used to is missing. Regenerative braking is usually reduced too. The car stays controllable but behaves differently — bear that in mind especially when overtaking and on slippery surfaces. What to do: you can get home, but there is no point putting it off. Try letting the car sleep and waking it; if the code clears after a restart and stays away, it was a one-off dropout. If it holds, have a service centre read out the accompanying DIF code — only that says whether it is the inverter, cooling, high-voltage wiring, or just a software fault. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
