DI_a233

a Alert

Code DI_a233 was reported by the “Drive inverter” controller in the car. The letter “a” in the middle places it among entries of the alert type.

What code DI_a233 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Impact detected on a front wheel

Drive Inverter Warning: Proximity signal is irrational

Drive Inverter Warning: Cruise control CAN node is MIA

Drive Inverter Warning: Regen is Limited

info from manualDI_A201

The powertrain is limiting regen braking. This can be for multiple reasons: the battery pack is too hot or cold, the battery pack is fully charged, or the battery pack is limiting for another reason.

This alert will clear over time

The accelerator pedal might behave differently: it will provide less regen braking than normal when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed.

Drive Inverter User Alert: System Starting Up...

Drive Inverter Warning: Steering column control module is MIA

Drive Inverter User Alert: Autopark canceled

info from manualDI_A184

Drive Inverter Warning: DIR CAN node MIA

DI is not receiving required feedback CAN messages from DIR

DI receives required feedback CAN messages from DIR

Drive Inverter Warning: The park brake is MIA to the drive inverter and the park request could not be honoured.

Drive Inverter Warning: Front wheel speed signal error

Drive Inverter Warning: Vertical acceleration or yaw rate error

User has overridden frunk state

Double pull frunk and frunk open and system state enable

Frunk closure or system state not enable

Drive Inverter Warning: No battery power

Drive Inverter Warning: BMS (Battery Management System) node is MIA on CAN for one or multiple messages

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
