What code DI_f078 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

DI_f078_adcRefLow

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The reference voltage used for the Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) is out of specification.

Servisní popis to říká přesně takhle. Čím to bývá: vadný zdroj reference v měniči, problém napájení jednotky, vnitřní závada elektroniky. Co s tím: tohle není svépomocná záležitost ani se to nedá objet.

A to przetworzenie potrzebuje stałego, dokładnie znanego punktu odniesienia, względem którego wszystko się mierzy. Napięcie odniesienia to właśnie to zero i pełny zakres razem. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Unable to drive” and the car will not move off. What happened: the reference voltage used by the analogue-to-digital converter in the drive inverter is out of specification. The service description puts it exactly that way. What the reference voltage is: the drive inverter measures a great many analogue quantities — voltages, currents, accelerator pedal position, temperatures. For the computer to process them, the converter has to translate them into numbers. And that conversion needs a fixed, precisely known reference point against which everything is measured. The reference voltage is that zero and full scale together. Why this immediately means no driving: if the reference point shifts, all the measurements shift at once. The inverter would keep computing, it would simply get the wrong numbers — and those then affect the currents to the motor and the reading of the accelerator. A misread accelerator is dangerous in both directions: the car may fail to accelerate when it should, or the opposite. So the system does not paper over an invalid reference; it refuses to drive. Why it cannot be half-trusted: a reference error is insidious precisely because it does not look like an error. The values stay plausible, just shifted. If this were not monitored separately, there would be no way to spot it. What usually causes it: a faulty reference source in the inverter, a supply problem in the unit, an internal electronics fault. What to do: this is not a do-it-yourself matter and cannot be worked around. The car is undriveable; call a tow and a service centre. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
