What code DI_f081 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

An accelerator pedal track 1 problem was detected.

Nechte odtáhnout a diagnostikovat. Oprava bývá naštěstí přímočará a nejde o zásah do vysokého napětí — obvykle se mění celý pedálový modul.

Odmowa jazdy to jedyny bezpieczny wybór. Zleć holowanie i diagnostykę. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Unable to drive” and the car will not move off. What happened: the drive inverter detected a problem on track 1 of the accelerator pedal. Why the pedal has two tracks: Tesla's accelerator pedal contains two independent sensors measuring the same position. They are not a backup in the sense that the second stands in for the first — they are there for checking. The software continuously compares what one reports against the other. When they agree, the position can be trusted. When they diverge, you know one of them is lying, even if you do not know which. Why that leads to a driving ban: a misread accelerator is one of the few things that can cause unintended acceleration. That is exactly why it is monitored twice, and exactly why a mismatch stops things. The system has no way to decide which sensor is the right one, and you do not guess with an accelerator pedal. Refusing to drive is the only safe choice. What usually causes it: a faulty sensor in the pedal, a corroded or loose connector, damaged wiring running to the pedal. The pedal sits in the footwell, where water off shoes and road salt get in, so connectors there corrode more often than you would expect. What to do: the car will not go and there is no way around it. Have it towed and diagnosed. The repair is fortunately usually straightforward and not a high-voltage job — normally the whole pedal module is replaced. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
