What code DI_u021 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

DI_u021_rearMotorMode

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert indicates that the rear motor mode was selected by the user.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Front motor disabled” and this is one of the few codes where the car did not bring the state about itself — you asked for it. What happened: according to Tesla's description this is rear motor mode selected by the user. The letter “u” in the code means a user alert, not a fault. The car is simply announcing that it is driving the way you set it up. What that means in practice: on a dual-motor car the front motor is disconnected and only the rear axle stays driven. The car keeps going, just with lower total power and without all-wheel drive. Acceleration will be noticeably weaker and traction on slippery surfaces worse. Why such a choice exists at all: it is usually a service or diagnostic mode, used when hunting a fault on the front drive, when measuring on a rolling road, or when the front motor is out of action and the car still has to be moved. What to do if you did not select it: then it is worth finding out who did. Most often it is a leftover from service work where the mode was not put back. Occasionally it turns up after third-party diagnostics. If nobody set anything of the sort and the front motor still does not run, look among the other DI group codes — then it is a genuine fault rather than a choice. What to do: switch the mode off where it was switched on, or ask a service centre to do it. Driving in this state is safe; just expect reduced capability from the car in winter. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
