What code DI_w126 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Power Reduced

Source: official Tesla document “Model S Alert Codes” (2018)

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

DI_w126_limpMode

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Drive Inverter (DI) has detected that the vehicle has entered Limp mode.

Driver experiences with code DI_w126

This part is written by you. If you have had code DI_w126, tell us when it appeared, what brought it on and how it ended — for the next person, one such sentence is often worth more than the entire service documentation.

Počítejte s tím a víc používejte brzdu.

Was tun: Heimkommen geht sicher.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Power Reduced” and the car becomes noticeably duller in its responses. What happened: the drive control unit put the car into limp mode. Limp mode is not a fault in itself — it is the response to one. The unit ran into a condition that makes it unwilling to deliver full power, and it would rather restrict it than risk damage. What you will feel at the wheel: the accelerator responds lazily, the car does not pick up as usual, and you will not reach your normal speed on the motorway. Regeneration is usually limited too, so the car brakes less when you lift off — and one-pedal driving no longer works the way you are used to. Allow for that and use the brake more. What may lie behind it: overheating of the inverter or motor, a cooling problem, low or fluctuating battery voltage, a fault in one inverter phase, a temperature sensor error. The code itself does not carry the reason — that sits in the accompanying record. What to do: you can get home safely. Try letting the car sleep and waking it; if it was overheating after hard use, limp mode clears once things cool. If it persists even after a rest, have the diagnostics read out and ask about the accompanying code — only that says what is being repaired. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
