What code DI_w169 means

The Drive Inverter — the power electronics that drive the motor. Codes from here show up as reduced power, a message about limited acceleration or, in worse cases, an inability to drive. Temperature codes are common too: the inverter protects itself under sustained load.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert triggers when "HOLD" stopping mode is disabled temporarily or for the rest of the drive cycle. The stopping mode will change to "ROLL" behavior while it is unavailable.

Není to porucha brzd — brzdy fungují normálně a stačí sešlápnout pedál.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Automatic vehicle hold disabled” and when you come to a stop the car starts behaving differently from what you are used to. What happened: the one-pedal driving module is unavailable. The service description says it precisely: HOLD stopping mode is disabled temporarily or for the rest of the drive cycle, and the behaviour changes to ROLL. What HOLD and ROLL are: HOLD means the car stays standing on its own after coming to a complete stop, with no brake pressed. ROLL means it creeps forward after stopping — like an automatic on a combustion car when you release the brake. Tesla offers both as a setting, and this code means the first has just been taken away from you. Why it is worth knowing before you find out yourself: anyone who drives with HOLD gets used to taking their foot off the pedals after stopping. The moment it switches to ROLL and you do not know, the car will creep forward on its own at a junction or in traffic. It is not a brake fault — the brakes work normally and a press of the pedal is enough. But it is a surprise at the least convenient moment. What usually causes it: a temporary limitation due to another fault, overheated brakes, a communication error between units, a software change. Tesla itself writes that it may apply only temporarily or for the rest of the drive cycle — so it often returns to normal after the car restarts. What to do: for the rest of the journey expect to have to hold the brake after stopping. If it recurs even after switching the car off and on, have the diagnostics read out and look for the code that triggered it. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
