What code DIS_f129 means

The supervisory safety channel of the drive inverter. It verifies that the main motor control is doing what it should. Codes from here often accompany DI codes.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

DIS_f129_epbNotApplied

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

Drive Inverter Slave Fault: The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) did not apply while in standstill state.

Vůz tedy stojí, brzda měla zabrat a nezabrala.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

This code has no message of its own on screen, but what it describes deserves attention. What happened: the slave drive inverter reports that the electronic parking brake did not apply while the car was at a standstill. So the car is stationary, the brake should have grabbed, and it did not. Why that matters: the electronic parking brake is what holds the car in place when nobody inside is on the brake pedal. On a Tesla it applies automatically when park is selected and is the only mechanical certainty against rolling away. If it does not apply, the car may be standing still only because the ground is level — and that is a certainty only until you park on a slope. Why the drive inverter reports it: the inverter knows whether the vehicle is stationary because it measures motor speed. It is therefore well placed to check whether what should have happened at standstill actually did. It is a cross-check between two systems that at first glance have nothing to do with each other. What usually causes it: a fault in the parking brake mechanism, an overloaded or faulty brake motor, damaged wiring, a communication error between units. Sometimes a frozen or corroded mechanism is the cause. What to do: until it is fixed, park on the level and use what stands in for a chock on an automatic — ideally turn the wheels into the kerb. Book service and do not leave it for later; a parking brake is not something worth postponing. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
