What code EFUSE_w129 means

The electronic fuse in the 12 V circuit. It protects the supply to key consumers and watches the 12 V battery's temperature and voltage. These codes often appear alongside 12 V battery problems.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert should not occur since there are no frunk E-fuses in the E-fuse module. Instead, jumpers are used to pass through the module.

Nechte vyčíst kompletní diagnostiku a řešte to, co dává smysl.

Nechajte vyčítať kompletnú diagnostiku a riešte to, čo dáva zmysel.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

This code is a special case, and its most interesting part is a note from Tesla itself. What the code formally means: the electronic fuse on the supply running to the front boot area has tripped because of a detected fault. An electronic fuse works like a classic fuse, except that instead of blowing it switches off electronically and can be reset. Tripping would mean the control units fed by that branch lose power, with loss of drive as the main consequence. And now the substance: Tesla's own service description for this code states, in so many words, that it should not occur at all — because there are no front-boot electronic fuses in the fuse module. In their place there are jumpers that simply pass the current through the module. So the code reports the tripping of something that does not physically exist in the module. What to take from that: if you see this code in a service log, it is very likely a leftover from an older firmware version or an overlooked catalogue entry rather than a real event in the car. Do not go hunting for a fault in the front boot on its account. When to pursue it anyway: if the car genuinely lost drive or would not move off. In that case another code carries the cause and this one is just noise. Have the full diagnostics read out and address what makes sense. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
