What code EPAS3P_a124 means

The primary channel of third-generation power steering. Newer cars have a redundant steering system — this is its main half.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Zkuste tedy vůz uspat a probudit.

Skúste teda vozidlo uspať a zobudiť.

Spróbuj więc uśpić auto i obudzić je.

This code is worth paying attention to, because it concerns the steering assistance. What happened: the temperature sensor in the electric power steering control unit is reporting a value that does not change. The term is stuck in range — the signal sits within a plausible range, so at first glance it does not look wrong, but it is frozen at one value. That is more treacherous than a sensor failing outright: the unit receives a number that looks credible but does not match reality. Why the unit measures its own temperature: power steering draws a lot of current while turning and its electronics heat up. From the temperature the unit governs how much force it can afford to deliver without burning itself out. Without a trustworthy reading it cannot make that call, so it limits assistance as a precaution. What you will feel at the wheel: Tesla's description says it directly — reduced steering assist. The wheel becomes heavier, most noticeably while parking and in slow corners. The car remains controllable but demands more effort than you are used to. What to do: Tesla states for this code that it clears by clearing the fault and power cycling. So try letting the car sleep and waking it. If the message returns, the sensor is faulty and the unit needs checking — steering is not something to experiment with. Reported by Model 3, and Model S and X from 2021.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
