What code EPB_w080 means

The electric parking brake. These codes describe the brake failing to apply, failing to release, or the caliper motor reporting a short. Not something to leave alone.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

A positive half bridge over-temperature fault shall be asserted when the half bridge diagnostic fault line latches for more than 10ms on the positive lead of the right motor.

Gałąź dodatnia to jedna z nich.

This code has no message of its own on screen, but it points at a very specific place in the parking brake electronics. What happened: a power half bridge on the positive lead of the right parking brake motor overheated. More precisely, the half bridge's diagnostic fault line latched for more than ten milliseconds, and the system read that as over-temperature. What a half bridge is: the electronics that drive the brake motor in both directions. The motor has to be able to apply the brake and release it, so it must turn both ways, and that is done with a pair of switching devices on each side. The positive lead is one of them. Why temperature specifically is monitored: these switching devices have their own over-temperature protection and report it over a separate diagnostic line. Overheating usually does not mean the half bridge is faulty — rather that more current had to pass through it than expected. And more current means the motor was pulling against greater resistance. Why you should therefore look elsewhere too: the cause is often not the electronics but the mechanics. A seized caliper, a corroded mechanism, a stiff slider. The electronics overheated because they had to try harder than they should. Why ten milliseconds specifically: a brief bounce is to be expected on every switching event. So the system only acts on a condition that persists — otherwise it would report a fault on every apply. What to do: the parking brake may work unreliably or stop altogether. Book service, and expect the mechanics of the right rear wheel to be inspected too, not just the electronics.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
