What code EPBL_a195 means

The left caliper of the electric parking brake. The codes mean the same as the EPB group.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

EPBL_a195_parkForDriverIsLeaving

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

VCFRONT set driverIsLeaving, Electronic Parking Brake responded by parking

EPB_unitStatus entered PARKING due to driverIsLeaving.

EPB_unitStatus != PARKED or 15s after set

Electronic Parking Brake will be applied

Electronic Parking Brake apply failed.

Electronic Parking Brake faulted during apply && (nonterminal == TRUE) && (stateRequest != ESM_DYNAMIC)

Electronic Parking Brake may not be applied, and caliper may be obstructed

Electronic Parking Brake apply was interrupted. Apply will be retried.

The screen shows “Vehicle automatically parked to prevent rollaway” and the car applies the parking brake itself. What happened: the front controller decided the driver is leaving the car and passed that on to the electric park brake. The brake responded with what it can do — it parked. This is a safety chain against the car rolling away driverless. How the car knows you are leaving: it watches several things at once — the seat occupancy sensor, an open door, an unbuckled belt and the presence of the key. If the conclusion is that nobody is at the wheel and the car is not in Park, it parks itself. In most cases this is not a fault. Typically you step out briefly without selecting Park — at a charger, at a barrier, while manoeuvring on a driveway. The car did exactly what it should. When it is something else: if the brake applies while you are sitting normally at the wheel. That points at the seat occupancy sensor or its connector, and happens after a seat has been removed, after upholstery work, or when something is trapped under the seat. What to do: the code clears once the brake reports it is no longer parking, or automatically after fifteen seconds. If it repeats for no reason, have the occupancy sensor and the wiring under the driver's seat checked. Reported by Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

Anything specific helps: the circumstances in which the code appeared, whether it cleared itself, what the service centre said, what was replaced and roughly what it cost.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
