What code EPBL_a248 means

The left caliper of the electric parking brake. The codes mean the same as the EPB group.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Electronic Parking Brake apply was interrupted during dynamic apply. Apply failed.

Electronic Parking Brake faulted while applying and during ESM_DYNAMIC

Electronic Parking Brake could not be applied, car may be free rolling

Non-nominal termination of external park

Motor current was higher than expected.

Motor current measurement, with calibration offset subtracted, was higher than 17 amps.

Voltage drop on input power is high

Electronic Parking Brake is performing dynamic apply

One or more of the expected CAN messages from TAS were not received.

A message the local ECU expects to receive from the TAS ECU hasn't been received within the expected timeout or the drop rate is too high while the TAS is CAN active. The ECU is considered CAN active when VCFRONT_vehGoToSleep is 0.

All messages the local ECU expects to receive from the TAS ECU are being received or the TAS ECU is CAN inactive.

Air suspension functionality may be missing.

VCLEFT/VCRIGHT: Estimated resistance exceeds 500mOhm when input current is under 15A and exceeds 50mOhm when input current is over 15A. (VC-6540); VCFRONT: Estimated resistance exceeds 100mOhm when input current from PCS is under 10A and exceeds 20mOhm when input current is over 10A.

VCLEFT/VCRIGHT: Estimated resistance is less than 500mOhm when input current is under 15A and is less than 50mOhm when input current is over 15A. (VC-6540); VCFRONT: Estimated resistance is less than 100mOhm when input current from PCS is under 10A and is less than 20mOhm when input current is over 10A.

May result in vehicle becoming inoperable. Note: Service should ignore this alert on VCFRONT for the time being.

Road grade is too steep to secure with Park Brake

What to do about it

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.
