What code FC_a274 means

The control of DC fast charging — CCS, CHAdeMO and the Chinese GB/T standard. These codes describe communication with the charger, isolation tests and connector locking. They appear almost exclusively at fast chargers, not when charging at home.

Severity — a

The most common type. The car logged the event and may have shown it on the screen. The range is wide — from something trivial that clears itself to something that needs attention.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

FC_a274_GB_negToPcbDeltaHi

We do not have a detailed description for this code yet

Tesla only publishes descriptions for some codes. What we do know for certain is its classification and the internal name above — and from those you can reliably tell which part of the car it concerns.

The screen shows “Charging adapter temperature high” and fast charging either does not start or runs slower than it should. What happened: this code belongs to charging under the Chinese GB/T standard, that is, to fast chargers on the Chinese market. The car compares the temperature of the connector's negative pin with the temperature of the fast-charge unit's circuit board. When the difference is larger than expected, it means the pin is heating up excessively — a classic sign of increased contact resistance. The car therefore pulls the maximum charging power down so the joint does not heat further. Why the contact matters: during fast charging currents of several hundred amps pass through the connector. An oxidised, burnt or loose pin is enough for heat to build at that point. Ignoring it risks damaging the connector on both sides and, in the worst case, thermal damage. What to do: try a different station — if it charges at normal power elsewhere, the problem is with that particular stall. If the message appears everywhere, have the car's charge port checked, above all the condition and cleanliness of the pins. Note that this code does not normally appear in Europe: cars here charge over CCS2, not GB/T. Reported by Cybertruck, Model 3, Model S and X from 2021, and Model Y.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
