What code FC_u002 means

The control of DC fast charging — CCS, CHAdeMO and the Chinese GB/T standard. These codes describe communication with the charger, isolation tests and connector locking. They appear almost exclusively at fast chargers, not when charging at home.

Severity — u

Not a defect. The car is waiting for you — press the brake, close a door, top up a fluid, change a setting.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

FC_u002_scPowerShared

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

This alert was formerly named FC_u002_scPowerShared_PT in firmware versions prior to 2017.12. If FC_u002_scPowerShared_PT appears on the vehicle or in the logs, update the vehicle firmware to the current version.

With this code it is honest to start with what Tesla publicly says about it — and that is not much. What Tesla says: in firmware versions prior to 2017.12 the code was named FC_u002_scPowerShared_PT. And if that old name appears on the vehicle or in the logs, the firmware should be updated to the current version. Tesla publishes nothing further about it. What the name implies: the letter “u” marks a user alert rather than a fault, and the FC group belongs to fast charging. The original name referred to shared Supercharger power. What power sharing is: older Superchargers have stalls paired up, sharing one source between them. When a second car plugs into the neighbouring stall, the power is split between them — and whoever arrived first and is at a lower state of charge usually gets the larger share. In practice it shows up as charging suddenly slowing without anything being broken. Newer stations with a power cabinet do not do this. Why this is not a defect: it is an advisory about the station's operating state. Charging continues, just more slowly than you expected. What to take from it: if you see this code or its old name, it is worth checking the firmware version — Tesla recommends that itself. And if your charging slowed at a Supercharger with paired stalls, that is not a fault in the car. To be plain about it: there is little information on this code, and we would rather admit that than invent something Tesla does not state.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
