What code FC_w151 means

The control of DC fast charging — CCS, CHAdeMO and the Chinese GB/T standard. These codes describe communication with the charger, isolation tests and connector locking. They appear almost exclusively at fast chargers, not when charging at home.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

There is a CHAdeMO adapter malfunction.

Servisní popis to shrnuje jednoznačně — jde o poruchu adaptéru.

Servisný popis to zhŕňa jednoznačne — ide o poruchu adaptéra.

To bliskie rodzeństwo kodu FC_w154 i obowiązuje o nim niemal to samo. Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Charging adapter temperature high” and fast charging runs slower than it should. It is a close relative of FC_w154 and almost everything applies equally. What happened: the CHAdeMO adapter compares the temperature at the vehicle-side connector with the temperature on the charger side. The difference between them is lower than expected. The only difference from FC_w154 is what it compares against — there its own circuit board, here the charging station. Why a small difference is suspicious: during fast charging, current in the hundreds of amps flows through the connector and that has to heat something. If the adapter measures near-identical temperatures, it is a sign one of the sensors is not reading correctly. And because connector overheat protection rests on those temperatures, the adapter would rather pull charging power back than trust a measurement it doubts. The service description sums it up unambiguously — there is an adapter malfunction. Where you will meet it: CHAdeMO is a Japanese fast-charging standard and is a fringe matter in Europe today. Cars here use CCS2, and you will more likely meet a CHAdeMO adapter on an imported car, or with someone who bought one for particular stalls. What to do: the fault is in the adapter, not the car. Try charging without it — over CCS or at a Supercharger. If the car takes full power there, that confirms the adapter, and it is dealt with by replacement. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
