What code FC_w154 means

The control of DC fast charging — CCS, CHAdeMO and the Chinese GB/T standard. These codes describe communication with the charger, isolation tests and connector locking. They appear almost exclusively at fast chargers, not when charging at home.

Severity — w

The car is flagging that something is not right. Driving is usually still possible, but some function may be limited.

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

There is a CHAdeMO adapter malfunction.

Pokud tam vůz nabírá normální výkon, potvrzuje to adaptér. Ten se opravovat nedá a řeší se výměnou. Týká se Modelu S 2012–2020 a Modelu X 2015–2020.

Servisný popis to zhŕňa stručne — ide o poruchu adaptéra.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Charging adapter temperature high” and fast charging runs slower than it should. What happened: the CHAdeMO adapter compares the temperature at the vehicle-side connector with the temperature of its own circuit board. Here the difference between them is lower than expected. The service description sums it up briefly — there is an adapter malfunction. Why a small difference is the suspicious part: during fast charging a large current flows through the connector, and that has to heat something. If the adapter measures near-identical temperatures, it is a sign one of the sensors is not reading correctly. And because connector overheat protection rests on exactly those temperatures, the adapter would rather pull charging power down than rely on a measurement it does not trust. What CHAdeMO is: a Japanese fast-charging standard. Tesla sold an adapter for it mainly for markets where CHAdeMO stalls were common. In Europe it is a fringe matter today — cars here use CCS2, and you will only meet CHAdeMO at older stalls. What to do: the fault is in the adapter, not the car. Try charging without it, over CCS or at a Supercharger. If the car takes normal power there, that confirms the adapter. It cannot be repaired and is dealt with by replacement. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
