What code GTW_f101 means

The Gateway — the hub through which the car's controllers talk to each other, and the route software updates take. Codes from here often mean some controller has gone quiet on the bus; the real fault is usually in that controller, not the gateway.

Severity — f

The more serious level. The affected component has shut down or is running in limp mode. These codes belong in a service centre.

What the car shows on screen

This is the message the car shows the driver when the code occurs. It comes from Tesla's official alert list and we leave it in the original English — this is exactly how it appears on the display.

Car Needs Service: Unable to Start Car

Internal alert name

This is how the fault is named inside the car's firmware. For codes without a description it is the most precise clue there is — the name itself says what the event is about.

Description from the service documentation

The text below comes from Tesla's technical documentation. We leave it in the original English so that translation cannot shift its meaning.

The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) platform is configured for a different vehicle type.

Co to znamená v praxi: každá řídicí jednotka Tesly ví, do jakého vozu patří.

Was tun: Selbst richten Sie hier nichts aus.

Dotyczy Modelu S 2012–2020 i Modelu X 2015–2020.

The screen shows “Car Needs Service: Unable to Start Car” and the car will not move off. What happened: the gateway found the electric park brake is configured for a different vehicle type. The service description puts it exactly that way — the park brake platform is configured for another vehicle. What that means in practice: every Tesla control unit knows which car it belongs to. The configuration determines how it should behave — the car's dimensions and weight, its braking system, which thresholds apply. When a unit runs with another model's configuration it may behave differently from what the rest of the car expects. With a park brake that is unacceptable, so the car will not even release for driving. When it happens: essentially always after a part replacement. A park brake unit from another car, a used spare, a unit from a scrapped vehicle — all cases where the part fits physically but carries its original car's configuration. Occasionally it also happens after an unfinished reprogramming at a workshop. What to do: there is nothing to achieve yourself. Unit configuration is set by a service centre through diagnostics or by a remote intervention from Tesla. The car will not drive in the meantime, so expect a tow. A word for anyone repairing at home: this code is a textbook illustration of why replacing a part on a Tesla is not enough — it still has to be configured to the specific car. Applies to Model S 2012–2020 and Model X 2015–2020.

What to do about it

01

Write down the whole code

Copy it exactly, letter and number included. Photographing the screen is safest — codes often differ by a single digit, and mixing them up leads somewhere else entirely.

02

Try letting the car sleep and wake

Some codes clear after a screen restart or after the car sits locked for a few hours. If the code does not come back, it was usually a one-off glitch.

03

Watch whether it repeats

A one-off entry and a code that appears after every drive are two different things. It helps a service centre enormously if you know exactly when it shows up.

04

Do not wait on safety systems

With airbags, brakes, steering and high voltage there is no point waiting it out. With the other groups you can watch and see whether the code returns at all.

Before you act on a code. This page is a reference dictionary, not a repair manual. It explains what an abbreviation means and what it relates to — it does not diagnose your car. The same code can have different causes, and its meaning also shifts between firmware versions. For anything involving brakes, steering, airbags or high voltage, go straight to a service centre.
